IMAGINARY ROOMS VOL 2:: A SELECTION OF NEW COMPOSITIONS CREATED BY ARTISTS FROM VARIOUS SOUND-MAKING BACKGROUNDS AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS. SOURCE MATERIAL PROVIDED BY CHICAGO DRUMMER AND COMPOSER TIM DAISY

REMOTE SOUND COLLABORATION INSPIRED BY A UNIQUE PERIOD IN TIME

"I sent over some sounds which I created and recorded on marimba, drums, and percussion, to a list of artists from diverse sound-making backgrounds and geographic locations. I asked them each to construct, reimagine, add to, subtract from.....to build a new piece (or set of pieces) using the source material provided. My aim is to provide multiple perspectives on the art of remote composition building during this time of lockdown and "non-togetherness."
I am thrilled by the results and I hope you will be too."

This material will be released in two volumes in digital format; a physical cd release is on the horizon for the fall of 2021

Artist Bios

Ishmael Ali is a first generation Filipino-Arab-American cellist, guitarist, improviser, composer, and electronic artist currently residing in Chicago. His work centers on exploring sound through improvisation, experimentation, collaboration, as well as a wide array of idiomatic approaches in an ever-changing, always-growing list of projects with diverse focuses and influences.Though varying drastically from group to group, a common thread in his work is the juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements to create something new: both foreign and familiar.

Sarah Ann Clausen is an alto saxophonist and composer based in Chicago, IL. Utilizing space, unique melodic content, and diverse textures, Sarah has developed an approach to improvisation and composition that is inspired by many musical traditions. While completing her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at Northern Illinois University, Sarah studied under renowned Chicago Saxophonist Geof Bradfield, and had the opportunity to work with artists such as Steve Coleman, Anna Webber, Jon Finlayson, Maria Grand, Jon Irabagon, John O’Gallager, and James Falzone.
Sarah performs regularly with Glass Jaw, a trio co-lead by drummer Emerson Hunton, bassist Jakob Heinemann. This versatile trio of young improvisers came together over a year ago and has been cultivating a wide repertoire of original music and a variety of approaches ever since.

Seth Andrew Davis is a performer, composer, improviser, & electronic musician working and living in Kansas City, MO. Davis is a part of the new music, free improvised, and electronic music scenes in Kansas City, performing in various ensembles, bands, and as a solo artist in KC and abroad. Davis is also the co-founder of Mother Brain Records, a Kansas City-based label focusing on releasing music from improvisers and experimental artists.

Lee Diamond is a cat-loving musician, dad, husband, cyclist and Realtor living in Evanston, IL. Lee is a composer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist with principal instruments of drums and piano with over 40 years of experience and a range of bands and projects in a wide variety of musical styles. This represents his first attempt to incorporate sound design and foley sound effects.

Bbob drake is an improvising musician and electro-acoustic luthier from Cleveland. He designs, builds, and plays electronic instruments in the tradition of Don Buchla and David Tudor, performing on these electroniums plus electro-acoustic and extended-technique traditional instruments. His performances span free and structured improvisation, new music composition, noise, and minimalist “lowercase” musics. He’s also done sound installations, soundtracks, consulting on public sound art projects, and leads workshops on building and playing electronic instruments. He teaches sound art, media installation, and electronics at Cleveland Institute of Art.

Mark Daelmans-Sikkel (1975) plays the clarinet in a well-regarded symphonic wind band (Tramharmonie) in Amsterdam. Aside from that, he plays every instrument he can lay his hand on, making sounds that are not always intended to be made with that instrument. Some would call that using extended techniques. Together with his brother-in-law Remco Sikkel he makes experimental tracks for fun. Furthermore he is an active member of AEMC (Ambient and Experimental Music Community) with it's own record label. He stays a bit more on the experimental side of things.

Mark Nelson is a Chicago-based pianist and keyboardist, synth programmer and audio engineer. His work with Johnny Blas, Joshua Jern and others can be heard on the radio. He is drawn to exploring a wide variety of music; he plays jazz, musicals, Afro-Cuban styles, original rock projects, classical, and gospel music. He regularly performs or has recorded with his jazz trio, the Latin jazz-fusion ensemble: Contrabanda, the No Reservations Orchestra, Johnny Blas’s Afro Libre, The Joshua Jern Orchestra, The Vern Spevak Big Band, Somewhere Sunny, the Nine Worlds Ensemble, the Chicago Groove Collective, and as a freelancer, “wherever the phone rings.” He has previously been a guest artist for the Interstate Eight Swing/Jazz Clinic, Seneca Jazz Festival, the IMEA All State Music Convention, the Bolingbrook: Jazz Under The Stars festival, the Elkhart and Chicago Jazz Festivals, and the Chicago Latin Jazz Festival. He earned a degree in Jazz Studies: Piano from North Central College.

Biliana Voutchkova is a devoted interdisciplinary artist, violinist, performer, composer, improviser and curator. Her constant creative research spans
the widest possible range of sound, movement and vision. Her extended sonic, technical and physical capacities evolved into the development of a highly
individual artistic language. Based between Berlin and her rural residency on the black sea coast of Bulgaria, Biliana works internationally as a soloist,
in group and collaborative settings and with renowned ensembles such as United Berlin, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, the Splitter Orchestra,
Zeitkratzer, Ensemble Modern, Voutchkova/Thieke duo etc. Her often unconventional projects include original site specific works, performances,
concerts, long durational and multi-disciplinary formats.
