Bill MacKay is a Chicago guitarist, composer and improviser who has worked extensively in folk, experimental rock, and improvised jazz. He works as a solo artist, with his group Darts & Arrows, and has maintained serious collaborations with Katinka Kleijn, LeRoy Bach, Renee Baker, Ben Boye, Matt Lux and Charles Rumback among other musicians.
Bill's father Donald MacKay was a large influence in many ways, not least of those artistically. He was a trumpeter and took him to see and hear many big bands, classical orchestras, and so on.His father was also very supportive of Bill's varied musical interests and studies: In Rochester,NY he studied classical guitar with Kevin Morse, and in Pittsburgh jazz with Eric Susoeff and Joe Negri. Meanwhile he played in several creative rock bands, delved into modes & scales associated with the raga-s of India, and worked to develop his own voice as a songwriter-composer.
As well as being a writer-poet, he has been a long-time student of French, Spanish and Portuguese. He remains intrigued not only by the connections between these studies and music making, but also by the ever-evolving arc from the traditional to the avant-garde.Incidentally, the title of this recording Chatham Park refers to an apartment complex in the south hills of Pittsburgh, since renamed, where Bill spent a good deal of his adolescence and formative years. His father was especially fond of the place, and in his lifetime rented no fewer than 7 apartments there.
